Paulo Rocha

A Portuguese filmmaker, he was born on December 22, 1935, in Porto. He studied law in Lisbon and at the IDHEC, in Paris. He was president of the Portuguese Cinema Center in the 1974-1975 biennium, and President of the Portuguese Directors Association. He gained international recognition with his first film, "The Green Years" (1964), winner of the Opera Prima Award at the Locarno Film Festival. Since then, he has been a constant presence at major film festivals. The screenplay for "The Golden River" had been written in 1964, after his first film was made. In 1995, he was part of the French series "Cinema of Our Time" (a selection of the 20th Mostra), with a documentary about his compatriot Manoel de Oliveira.
