The four-episode fictional miniseries follows the 36 hours leading up to the “Candelária Massacre”, one of Brazil’s greatest tragedies. On the night of July 23, 1993, eight young people were murdered near the Candelária Church in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The story is told from the perspective of four children: Douglas, Sete, Jesus and Pipoca, who face the challenges of surviving on the streets of Rio de Janeiro while nurturing hope for a different future. “Children of the Church Steps” has a predominantly black crew, both in front of and behind the cameras, and the collaboration of massacre survivors in its development.
