This is Marcello Mastroianni’s final film before he passed away. In the movie, he portrays an alter ego of filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira. The story follows a Portuguese director who hires a French actor for a Franco-Portuguese co- production. Although the actor was born in France, his father was a Portuguese man who passed away many years ago. While filming, the actor decides to visit his father’s village, hoping to meet an old aunt. The director joins him on the trip, revisiting memories of his childhood in the region.
Winner of the critics’ prize and of a special mention from the ecumenical jury at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
