JOLY-NORMANDIN COLLECTION (1896)

Sobre o filme

The Spanish Cinemathèque recently acquired a collection previously owned by D. Antonino Sagarmínaga, a trader who loved the cinematographic arts, collected films from 1883 to 1907 and organized crowd screenings for the “El Sítio” Cultural Society in Bilbao. The prints had their frames presented in a square format with five holes on each side, a French system invented by Henri Joly and distributed by Ernest Normandin, both engineers, known at the end of the 19th century as the Joly-Normandin system. When a Joly-Normandin projector caused a fire at the prestigious Bazar de la Charité in Paris in 1897, the format was pulled out of circulation within months. According to publications of the time, only three filmmakers who filmed with the system before it was discontinued were identified: Joly, Normandin and Eugène Pirou, a high society photographer in Paris. When the Spanish Cinemathèque began the collection’s digital restauration, the Portuguese Cinemathèque also had acquired a collection of titles along with a Joly-Normandin projector, one of the few units still existing, all collected by the trader and amateur photographer João Anacleto Rodrigues in 1897 when he would travel through the Madeira archipelago organizing film screenings. The two cinemathèques decided to restore both collections together, presenting 53 titles filmed between the summers of 1896 and 1897, forming the most important collection of Joly-Normandin titles today. The largest possible number of titles were preserved, including those damaged by chemical decomposition, presented here in chronological order according to their filming dates.
