Under the rule of an emperor, Koumbi is a pitiful city. To recover and prosper, the priests say that a human sacrifice is necessary, but the people no longer believe this. Sia is designated for the sacrifice, but her husband-to-be, Mamadi, a brave lieutenant in the army, rebels to prevent the death of his beloved. The Emperor falls, but the regime that supported him remains in force. Sia then becomes party to Kerfa, a mad, subversive old man. Mamadi is now the new chief in the city, and he offers her a crown as Empress. Sia refuses and, at Kerfa’ side, chooses rather to preach peace.
