Back to his small hometown, Xiao Wu is a pickpocket in crisis. A local cop is out to get him. An old thief friend snobs him since becoming an entrepreneur, actually in a cigarette illegal import business, and doesn‚Äôt even think inviting him to join. Mei Mei, the local karaoke hostess, is just stringing him along. A visit to his parents in a neighboring village could push him even more over the edge. It’ time for Xiao Wu to think about his future. A cool look at modern China filmed in the city of Fenyang, Jia Zhangke’ hometown. At the 1998 Berlin Film Festival his feature debut won the Netpac Award, created to promote the Asian cinema, and the Wolfgang Staudte, a jury award for a filmmaker’ first or second film exhibited in the Forum of New Cinema.
