At the age of 11, Li Cunxin was taken from a poor Chinese village to study ballet at Madame Mao’ dance school in Beijing. In 1979, he manages to get in the Houston Ballet Company during a cultural exchange program in Texas, where he begins a new and free life. The Chinese officials try to take him back to China, but a legal maneuvering and a marriage to an American dancer keep him in the USA. However, to fight for his dreams, he will have to abandon his family forever. Based on the autobiography of the Chinese ballet dancer Li Cunxin.
