Onimaru (1988)

Onimaru, a young tramp, is adopted by the family of Yamabé, responsible for assuaging the fury of the Mountain of Fire. He falls in love with Kinu, Yamabé’s daughter, but she marries the heir of the rival family to escape her fate which was to become a priestess. Deeply disappointed, Onimaru does all he can to become Lord of the Mountain and thus win his beloved. She dies, and Onimaru embarks on a reign of extreme cruelty, only later brought to an end by Kinu’s daughter. Based on the novel ‘Wuthering Heights’, by English writer Emily Bronté, and transposed to feudal Japan in an adaptation that utilizes techniques from nô theater.
