In a near future, mystic sectarian Gui Dao submits Continental China to a totalitarian regime with the support of fanatical followers. Two vagrants, Zhuai and his younger brother, Mian are arrested and deported to the Camp of Prosperity where a dissident spirit in both is to be re-educated. They discover, there, that the camp has more to it than mere propaganda, bureaucracy, traffic in drugs and in other items. In the meanwhile, Gui Dao is ousted from power, and the prison guards desert. Far from prison, Zhuai and Mian enjoy freedom as never before. Zhuai falls in love with Xuelan and moves in with her and their baby son into an empty flat. They try to live life and to draw from life the small bitter-sweet pleasures of day-to-day existence, but freedom arouses in them an uncontrolable capacity to dream which invariably renders the future more promising than the present.
