The Fountain (2006)

Sobre o filme

Three stories proceed in parallel. The story in the past takes place in Spain in the 16th century when conquistador Tomas Crep arrived in the New World in search of the Tree of Life. He began his search because of a romantic obsession – Queen Isabella. She believed the key to immortality would bring Spain more power against its numerous enemies. In the story told today, Tommy is a scientist who obsessively researches the cure for cancer, for his wife Izzi, whom he loves deeply, is dying as a result of the disease. In the third story, Tom is an astronaut of the 26th century, a man concerned with his past incarnations. Can human beings and love be eternal? The cast include Hugh Jackman who is the protagonist in The Prestige, also included in the selection for the 30th Mostra, and Rachel Weisz, winner of the 2006 Academy Award as supporting actress for The Constant Gardener. In addition, once again with Aronofsky are Ellen Burstyn, nominated for the Academy Award for Requiem for a Dream, and Sean Gulette, actor in his two earlier features. Another return is that of composer Clint Mansell who wrote the soundtrack in former films by the director and works here with a string quartet, the Kronos Quartet and with the Scottish band Mogwai of the experimental line. Aronofsky refused to use digital effects to give his film a more organic appearance that would survive the passage of time.
