In 1997, during the Asian financial crisis, Teresa, a Filipina newly arrived in Singapore in search of a better life, becomes the Lim family’s maid. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship. Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family. Ilo Ilo won the Caméra d’Or prize for best directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
