Charles Burnett : the only black director to be part of the series : tells of his personal experience with music as from the 1950s when he discovered the celestial chords of Gospel, with his grandmother: his mother introduced him to the heart-rending sorrow of the blues. This musical short story re-creates episodes of Burnett’ life interspersed with scenes from the files of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mississippi John Hurt, Victoria Spivey, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Ida Cox, W.C.Handy, Bessie Smith, Reverend Gary Davis, and others.
