At the age of 32, Helmut comes to the conclusion that he did not amount to much in life, and that he has lost a great number of chances in the past when the romance with the great love of his life, Britta, came to naught. The film then goes back in time to the eighties when Helmut Kohl was supreme in Germany, as yet divided by a wall that was about to fall. Helmut, the main character still lives with his parents in the small town where he was born. Britta decides she will go and live in America. The new political reality does not affect the lives of the friends, but Helmut is still apathetic. He is beginning to understand why his generation is not interested in politics, in what way his parents? divorce influenced his love life and, mainly, to realize that Tina may well be the woman of his life.
