Song and Tang work in a coalmine in the north of China. Chamou, Tang’ brother is with them. At the bottom of the mine, a drama: Song and Tang kill Chalou in cold blood, trigger a cave-in, and escape safe and sound. They pretend to be sad about the death of Chalou and demand money from the owner of the mine, or they will denounce the ‚Äòaccident‚Äô to the authorities. The owner gives in to the blackmail, fearful that the illegal exploitation of the mine will be discovered. After they receive the money and forward it on to their families, the partners begin to look out for a new victim. Yuan, a lonely boy, gratefully accepts the offer of a job in the mine, never suspecting at any time, that tragedy lies ahead. But the relationship between Song and Tang is no longer stable, and the plan is to undergo radical change. Banned by Chinese censorship, the film was awarded five prizes at the Festival of Asian Cinema in Deauville.
