In Milan, after visiting a friend that is terminal in a hospital, the writer Giovanni Pontano goes to a party for the release of his last book, and his wife Lidia Pontano visits the place where she lived many years ago. Over the course of one night, the couple face their romantic and social deterioration and confront their alienation from each other through the empty bourgeois circles of the city.
